Extraordinary Mom Delivers 5 Healthy Babies At The University Of Utah Hospital

As a couple, Fernando and his wife Guillermina discovered during the early stages of their pregnancy that they were going to have five babies at the same time. It was an exceptional experience since in the United States, less than 10 couples are blessed to have quintuplets each and every year.

Despite the news, this Dad and Mom stayed calm – something even the doctors could not believe. Whenever a mother carries an additional baby, the possibility of developing a complication is increased. Some of the complications include placental abruption, gestational diabetes and sometimes death. You can now image that the danger is multiplied five times when they are five in number.

Dr. Tracy Manuck who was Guillermina’s doctor termed the new mother extraordinary. Though Guillermina suffered from severe pre-eclampsia and high blood pressure, she never complained even once. Since she carried many babies, her baby bump developed some purple and blue bruising. Through the entire pregnancy, it was impressive that Fernando was always present to provide his wife with the needed support.

The 32-year-old mom carried the babies till 31 ½ weeks. Compared to many single-birth pregnancies, it was 7 weeks shorter, but 3 weeks longer than what most quintuplet mothers take. Since more time was spent in the womb by the quintuplets, they had well developed lungs compared to other quintuplets.

It was back in 2013, during the Memorial Day weekend when she went into labor. She went to the University of Utah Hospital within Salt Lake City. It was the first time the hospital was handling such a case, but a team of 8 doctors, dozens of nurses and one anesthesiologist did their best to ensure the mom and her babies were safe. It was a successful delivery and 3 girls and 2 boys were born – Jordan, Esmeralda, Fernando, Fatima and Marissa.
